Feng Shui (Shui means water / Feng means wind) is a system that recognizes the importance of water in our lives. In ancient Feng Shui, the practice focused on selecting the optimal land location for constructing the homes of kings and nobles: a house situated at the foot of a mountain, with two flowing streams on either side leading toward a sea or pond, was considered ideal—located in the “dragon’s belly.” Conversely, a house built over a well or stagnant water was regarded as having poor Feng Shui. In modern times, living permanently on a boat is considered hazardous to both physical and mental health.
In classical Feng Shui and ancient Vastu, the placement of water elements—such as wells, drainage tanks, bathrooms, and the like—was critically important for health. This significance has diminished today due to advancements in construction techniques, which have allowed for the creation of safer buildings. For instance, some people (incorrectly) believe that having a bathroom in the northeast corner of a house is bad Feng Shui or Vastu. Historically, the northeast corner in most parts of the Western Hemisphere was the coldest area, making it susceptible to mold and waste accumulation. Modern homes, however, no longer face this issue.
The general principle is to use water strategically to support professional life and wealth. To understand how to incorporate water elements effectively in your home or workplace, it is recommended to consult a certified Feng Shui expert.
